Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Mitch “Likes to Edit” Keeler

What does HAPedit stand for? It is an editor for HTML, ASP, and PHP. It is a wi⬘ text-mode editor useful for all developers of dynamic web pages.

Some of the included features for this freeware program include: syntax highlighting for html/PHP, HTML/ASP, JavaScript, CSS and SQL; page preview in browser; project manager; PHP code “compilation”; edit html tags code completion; preview images SQL console; FTP Manager; Code Explorer and more. It does a little bit of everything and does it as good as any other text editor you might find.

HAPedit Screenshot

HAPedit Pro: The tabbed interface is nice and the layout is familiar.
HAPedit Con: Just gives you the basics, others might be looking for a bit more in an editor.

Download HAPedit! | Visit HAPedit???s Web Site

Over all this download might not be my top favorite HTML editor, but it does offer a nice alternative if you are not happy with some of the other more popular solutions out there. It gets the job done and it will not cost you a single cent. What else could you want from a piece of software?

Quanta Plus

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Mitch ???Quanta Leap??? Keeler

Some people have been angry because I haven’t reviewed any Linux friendly applications here. Well, I decided to make them happy and do a little write up about Quanta Plus.

This freeware download is much more than just your standard HTML editor, it is a full blown web development environment. With its design based around how people deal with editing rather than just tossing in as many features as they could, Quanta Plus takes the cake as an awesome text editor for your web site files.

shot12

Quanta Pro: Out of all the ones I have reviewed, Quanta Pro has the best organization of features.

Quanta Con: Some of the more advanced features can seem a little scary. If you are using Linux as your computer’s OS it might not be so scary to you though.. :)

Download Quanta Plus! | Visit Quanta Plus???s Web Site

Quanta Plus is yet another award winning text editing masterpiece that is hard to beat. The only downside to this product is it is one that only the Linux people will be able to use as it has not yet been ported over for Windows users. It is part of KDE, a Linux desktop environment, released in the Kdewebdev package.

Matrix Y2K

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Mitch “M2K” Keeler

I remember Y2K just like it was yesterday. Computers were suppose to stop working, cows were going to produce cheese instead of milk and other oddities were suppose to happen. None of them did of course, and everything was just fine and dandy. Speaking of fine and dandy, that is also how I would describe the HTML editor - Matrix ͼK.

The free download offers all the usual features such as: HTML Tidy, Documents manager, Tag Library for PHP and HTML, quick access to commonly used tags, completion proposal, multi-document interface, syntax highlighting (highlighters can be adjusted and personalized), search/replace, character map.

Matrix Y2K Screenshot

Matrix Y2K Pro: Quick, Lightweight, and the 3 pane interface is nice.
Matrix Y2K Con: Wish there was more support documentation on the web site for it.

Download Matrix Y2K! | Visit Matrix Y2K’s Web Site

Over all this download might not be my top favorite HTML editor, but it does offer a nice alternative if you are not happy with some of the other more popular solutions out there. It gets the job done and it will not cost you a single cent. What else could you want from a piece of software?

NoteTab Light

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Mitch “Notepad Replacer” Keeler

I’ve been a huge fan of NoteTab (all the various versions) for a really long time. It is the first Notepad replacement I can remember using, and it continues to be my favorite. When editing HTML, PHP or any other type of code having a good text editor with plenty of tools is always handy to have.

A more than capable HTML editor, NoteTab Light is a simmer version of the award-winning NoteTab Pro. It features support for multiple document editing at once, capable of editing huge files, text drag and drop editing, auto-correct and replace, clip tool for text insertion, and a power clipboard tool too.

NoteTab Light

NoteTab Light Pro: Light weight and the clip tool is really neat for including saved information from other sources.

NoteTab Light Con: No spell checker in this version, would have to move up to Standard or Pro for that feature.

Download NoteTab Light! | Visit Fookes’s Web Site

Any PC out there would be made better with a Notpad replacement like NoteTab Light. I don’t know any webmaster that doesn’t at least use one power text editor and NoteTab Light stands up to the rest and is at least equal or better than its competitors.

Trellian WebPage

By Mitch “Trellian Lover” Keeler

Another fabulous freeware tool that will help you get your web site out of your head and onto the Web is Trellian WebPage. This freeware download features an intuitive interface, importing, color highlighted HTML editor, meta tag editor, drag and drop editing, a built in spell checker and more.

It does all of this pretty much in the same window. No need to switch back and forth between windows or getting overwhelmed by design clutter on your desktop.

Trellian Screenshot

WebPage Pro: Seems to do a little ‘bit of everything!

WebPage Con: Top toolbars are a little busy and might seem intimidating.

Download Trellian WebPage! | Visit Trellian’s Web Site

With tons of features, and the ease of use definitely in its checkmark box I think Trellian WebPage is a great alternative for those looking for an simple WYSIWYG web page editor.

PSPad - Text Editing and FTP Combined

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

By Mitch “The Coder” Keeler

If you work with your web page code as plain text, but you would like an editor that delivers more than your standard notepad does, PSPad deserves your attention. it is the freeware choice for people who need an FTP client and HTML editor combined.

With its built in FTP client, multiple document interface, macro recorder, and color coded differences between code it both saves time and engery when it comes to making a few changes here and there to any of your site’s files. Check out its full list of features to see what else you can do.

PSPad Screenshot

PSPad Pro: Free, reliable and rock solid. For those out there that want the ease of use of a WYSIWYG editor but don’t want to feel limited in what they can do.

PSPad Con: Might be too powerful for some. Also don’t let the coding support in there overwhelm you either.

Download PSPad! | Visit PSPad’s Web Site

For a free application, PSPad delivers in areas where others can not and does so without a flaw to be seen. It also includes plugin support for those of you who might use the TopStyle CSS editor too. Give it a shot, and let me know what you think.

Alleycode - Text and HTML Editor

Monday, February 11th, 2008

By Mitch “Drag and Drop” Keeler

Being lucky enough to be the one selected to look at the slew of freeware products we will be reviewing here has been a blessing. I check to check out and use a lot of awesome programs and honestly one of the most impressive thus far is Alleycode.

Alleycode is like a mash up of your traditional text and WYSIWYG editors. The Synchro View feature allows you to edit the page in question in real time and see instantly how your changes effect the layout. Other features worth looking into are the Quick Edit, CSS Wizard, Turf View, HTML Toolbar and more. You can check out all the features it provides on their web site. From head to toe a great freeware download.

Alleycode Screenshot

Alleycode Pro: Does more than most paid applications do, plus it is free!

Alleycode Con: Not recommended by developer to use with Windows Vista.

Download Alleycode! | Visit Alleycode’s Web Site

I honestly can not say enough good things about this product. In comparison with some of the paid software solutions that do the same thing, it beats them hands down. So if you are in the hunt for a solid HTML and text editor Alleycode is well worth checking into.

Nvu - Powerful WYSIWYG Editor

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Mitch “Easy Editing” Keeler

Maybe you don’t have the cash to splurge on Dreamweaver or FrontPage but you still want a good WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get) editor. What options do you have for your web hosting plan? There are many out there - but top of the line in my opinion is Nvu.

Nvu is the open source version of the editor that used to come with Netscape. It has been improved upon though by the open source community and has become on of the better free site editors out there. If you can use a word processor, you can use Nvu to create and maintain your own web site.

Nvu Screenshot of Editor

Nvu Pro: Great editor for static sites, and the help section is awesome too.

Nvu Con: Might take some playing around with before you learn how to use it.

Download Nvu! | Vist Nvu’s Web Site

Once you learn how to do things and what you are doing, Nvu is a great tool for any webmaster to use to build up their web site, update their content and change their design. It is powerful yet doesn’t overwhelm you with a lot of stuff you do not need.
