Make SSI work on HTML Pages

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Want to make Sever Side Includes (SSI) work on .html web pages?

On a web hosting server, the .shtml has to be used when you use Sever Side Includes (SSI) on a server. You can override this behavior in your .htaccess file though.

To configure the server in a way so that on your hosting account .html files can use Server Side Includes, create a .htaccess file (or edit your current one) and add this to it:

AddType text/html .html
AddHandler server-parsed .html

This will tell the server that it is, "OK" for .html files to use the Server Side Include code that you usually need .shtml files for.

Vanilla Web Forum Hosting at Lunarpages

Vanilla Forum Hosting at Lunarpages

Lunarpages fully supports the lightweight and simple Vanilla forum script.  What is Vanilla?  It is an open-source, standards-compliant, multi-lingual, fully extensible discussion forum for the Web.

While it is not supported via the cPanel’s Fantastico or LPCP’s WebApps manager, the script is simple enough for anybody to download, setup and install in minutes.  For more help on the install process, check out this quick guide I wrote up for the Lunarpages web hosting wiki.

Addons Galore – One of Vanilla’s big strengths is the fact that is supports a number of awesome addons to extend the script even further.  Via their addon page, you can check out a number of themes, plugins and applications available for your own Vanilla message board installation.

Want to take the script out for a test drive?  Check out the demo features on OpenSourceCMS to take a look at both the front end and the back end of this fantastic forum script.

For more Vanilla support and help – be sure to check out:

November is Lunarpages Script Month!

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

I have decided to start exploring various traffic networks and to find out how the traffic they send to web hosting providers affects their websites’ Search Engine rankings. So I created accounts with a few traffic generator sites and begun browsing. How do traffic generators work?

In general there are two types of traffic systems […]

Tips for New Facebook Users

Lunarpages on Facebook!

I have been spending a lot of my time on Facebook here recently.  I am far from being a Facebook expert, however I do have a few tips for you if you have not tried it yet, or you were scared away.  Here are some of my own Facebook tips for those of you who might be new to the social networking scene.

Don’t be Afraid to Be Social

I know a lot of people who have signed up for Facebook, and then said they, “Didn’t get it”.  Usually, after that I ask them if they went out and commented on other people’s profiles, or message a few friends.  The usual reaction to that is, “No”.  If you want people to be sociable towards you, you have to be sociable towards them.

Go Search for Groups and Friends

Do not wait for people to come to you, you must go out to the people!  Facebook has some neat tools when it comes to searching for friends and family members.  You can even search for people you might have gone to high school or college with.  A few months back, I actually got caught up with a girl I was in grade school with, and I probably had not seen in over a decade.  There are many groups out there too, the best one of course, would be the Lunarpages Group on Facebook:

Come Join the Lunarpages Group on Facebook!

Alright, that might be a little self promoting, but that leads me into the next topic.

Market Yourself and Your Brand

Once you get Facebook down as a social platform, use it to promote yourself and your own projects.  Via notes, applications and more – you can share your most recent blog posts, your tools and services you have created or even start up your own group dedicated to something you love.  They say that word of mouth advertising is the best, and letting your friends know about something you have done via Facebook gives you an almost instant access to their browser, to have them go check it out.

What other ways have you or would you suggest to use Facebook?

Looking for a GeoCities Alternative?

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Our Easy Site Builder - LPQuicksite

With word coming out that Yahoo has decided to pull the plug on GeoCities, a lot of people are looking for a great alternative.  Lunarpages provides a hosting plan I think would be perfect for any soon to be former GeoCities webmaster, our Quicksite plan.

Where does LPQuicksite outshine Yahoo’s GeoCities? Well, for one you can host with you very own domain name.  You can instantly register that domain that is perfect for you or your business.  You also have over 500 templates to choose from, customize and make your own.

The customization doesn’t in there though.  Once you get into content creation, you will find you can easily:

  • Upload Photos, Videos, Documents, and More!
  • Build Your Own Store!
  • Create a Blog or Image Gallery!
  • Instant Email Creation &amp Management!

Here is a screenshot of the design interface:

Not convinced?  Give the Quicksite Demo a Try! Also, be sure to check out all the tutorials and support we have for the LPQuicksite plan via our web hosting wiki, including the getting started guide.

Special Coupon Code: If you plan to switch from Yahoo! GeoCities to Lunarpages, use the coupon code Geo for $35 off the 12 or 24 month Quicksite hosting plan!

RIP GeoCities, we will miss you… however, there is a better alternative now to choose from.  You can take your web site live in under two hours with the free design and development assistance from Lunarpages.  So before you start looking elsewhere for a GeoCities alternative, remember Lunarpages and the LPQuicksite plan.

What Are the Default Files and Folders for WordPress?

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

This question come to me via a forum user, so I thought I would share the answer with you all here.  So what are the default files and folders packaged with WordPress?  They are:

/wordpress/

   /wp-includes/

  /wp-content/

  /wp-admin/

      xmlrpc.php

      wp-trackback.php

      wp-rss2.php

      wp-rss.php

      wp-register.php

      wp-rdf.php

      wp-pass.php

      wp-mail.php

      wp-login.php

      wp-load.php

      wp-links-opml.php

      wp-feed.php

      wp-cron.php

      wp-config-sample.php

      wp-commentsrss2.php

      wp-comments-post.php

      wp-blog-header.php

      wp-atom.php

      wp-app.php

      readme.html

      license.txt

      index.php

Now, just in case this list ever goes out of date – let me now tell you how you can find this file list on your own.  All you need to do is visit the WordPress download page, download the latest WordPress version, and then take a peek inside of the .zip file.

Now why is this handy to have?  Well, for those people who do not install by hand (and instead use a tool like Fantastico) they may have never looked at the actual files that are installed.  So now for those people out there, you have list to go by.
